Ultrasonic cleaning:
what it is and what it is for

Ultrasonic cleaning is finding more and more applications in the industrial sector. This washing technology uses high-frequency sound waves to effectively remove dirt from surfaces.

In this article, we will explain how industrial ultrasonic washing works, its applications and the advantages of DBM systems for this technology.

Ultrasonic cleaning: how it works

The ultrasonic cleaning system guarantees excellent results, even on very dirty objects. The action of the high-frequency vibrations in the cleaning tank allows you to shatter dirt, including rusty residues, limescale, grease and paint residues.

Let's see how the mechanism works.

  • Ultrasound wave generation. The process begins with the generation of ultrasonic waves, that is sound waves with frequencies above 20 kHz. Ultrasonic transducers, which convert electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical waves, are used to create them.
  • Formation of cavity bubbles. The ultrasound waves propagate in the water or cleaning liquid of the washing system. Their movement creates cycles of compression and rarefaction, giving rise to tiny cavity bubbles.
  • Compression and implosion of bubbles. The cavity bubbles compress and expand rapidly, until they reach the critical point of implosion. This phenomenon, known as cavitation, releases microscopic shock waves that combine with high-pressure water flows. This combined action, together with the one of any chemical agents present, lifts and removes dirt even in the most difficult places.

In this way, Industrial ultrasonic cleaning allows surfaces to be cleaned effectively but gently. These characteristics, as we will see, make it suitable for various applications.

Uses and applications

Various industrial sectors use the ultrasonic cleaning system to wash objects, products and components. Let’s see some examples.

  • Small mechanical parts. Here precision is essential, and this is why ultrasonic cleaning is so suitable. In fact, it allows dirt to be removed even from tiny components, removing oils, grease and metal particles.
  • Taps. Taps often have complex geometries and finished surfaces. The industrial ultrasonic cleaning allows you to clean cavities, curves and recesses while maintaining the original finishing quality.
  • Watchmaking and goldsmithing. Similarly, this technique allows you to clean watches, jewellery, metal links without damaging the surfaces, combining functionality and aesthetics.
  • Accessories in the fashion industry. Buckles, buttons and fasteners are all suitable for ultrasonic cleaning, which preserves the quality of materials and finishes without compromising structural integrity of the accessories.
  • Medical sector. Ultrasonic cleaning is also used to clean surgical instruments and medical devices. The final result offers an impeccable level of hygiene and safety.

Ultrasonic cleaning systems can be classified into three categories: multi-tank, single-tank and mono-chamber.

Multi-tank systems allow simultaneous cleaning of different batches, increasing
productivity and time optimisation. Single-tank systems are ideal for smaller loads, while mono-chamber systems are more versatile, as they allow parts of different sizes and types to be cleaned in the same washing cycle.
In the next section, we will explore the tailor-made solutions offered by DBM technologies for industrial ultrasonic washing.

DBM solutions for industrial ultrasonic cleaning

Our ultrasonic industrial washing systems use multifrequency technology. In fact, they can vary the frequency, and therefore the washing action, even within the same tank.
This cleaning system applies to both water and solvent washing.

Consequently, it is present in several of our systems, for both types.

In the water-based washing sector, DBM Technologies offers:

  • Complex multi-tank systems, such as the KOMBI model, which reduces washing times and adapts to different requirements in terms of size, productivity and automation. It can be customised with additional features, to respond even better to the needs of companies.
  • LS single-chamber systems, which ensure high washing quality, minimal space and reduction in costs and consumption. The connected vacuum drying system makes it possible to perfectly dry even complexly structured parts, with applications in the aerospace and medical sectors.
  • VU and BLC single-vessel washing tanks and benches. VU tubs are able to handle even heavy loads, such as mould washing or metal tooling, while the small BLC tanks are particularly suitable for the medical sector and components from the jewellery/watchmaking.

Our industrial solvent washing systems also use ultrasonic technology.
In particular, the NYX alcohol-modified single-chamber vacuum washing systems
modified and the FLUOMATIC low-boiling solvent washing systems guarantee perfect results and high productivity.

These features make their application suitable in the fashion, mechanical engineering and aerospace industries.

But DBM's ultrasonic cleaning solutions and applications are many more.
Their flexibility allows them to be adapted to the most diverse needs. Contact us, we will find the perfect one for your company.
